Each month, we visit a new food spot thanks to the folks at Surprenant, Beneski & Nunes, an estate & elder planning law firm who like to shine a spotlight on local gems of the South Coast, especially small businesses that are family-run just like their own law firm.
In these waning days of summer, as we search for the quintessential meal to represent coastal living or vacationing, the allure of fresh seafood is strong.

Here in landlocked Carver, there is a great spot to enjoy just that. You don’t need water views to enjoy some great seafood; a picnic table outside in this little roadside plaza will do just fine. Maybe you are on your way to the Cape bridges and want to set the tone for your Cape Cod holiday; less than three miles off 495, this spot is perfect for a stopover. Summer Fridays and Sundays (the Cape-leaving crowd) are Fish on South Main’s busiest days.
The day we visited, we were greeted at the counter by Cassie McDonough, owner Steve McArdell’s niece. Cook Graham Molly fulfills the orders in the back. There is a lobster tank at one end of the place. In it is an 11 lb. giant. Such specimens usually don’t sell, so it’s really just a tank resident meant for oohs and aahs; most customers are quite happy with a 1½- to 2-lb. chick. There is another tank for rock crabs in the back, and it is covered because, as McArdell explains, “they like to climb.”

So how do people know about the place if they don’t find it on Google, where it boasts some very high ratings for the area? McArdell says he does a little bit of Facebook advertising, but it’s mostly by word of mouth through the locals. “It’s a good town. They have always supported me,” he says. In fact, that's how it got on our radar: a customer commented on one of our posts that we had to try it!
The menu is your basic fish & clam shack, and the quality of food is top-notch. The most popular order is the fish and chips, always made with haddock fillets. (McArdell calls the dish “old faithful.”) There are fried scallops, whole clams, clam strips, and shrimp. You can also get baked and grilled seafood, and for those on the go, a lengthy list of sandwiches.

On the day we visited, there was a fish taco special as well as some lobster corn fritters. Fish on South Main gets all its seafood from a distributor out of Scituate, their breading from a company in Vermont.
It’s not complicated. The seafood is fresh and the staff, friendly. What else do you need?

Lovers Bakery is a revelation. Open the doors and you’re assaulted with the delicious smell of butter and baking. They opened in December 2025 and there’s a steady stream of customers, even at odd mid-morning times.
