8 Great Things: November on the South Coast

We’ve got a cozy mixture of indoor and outdoor activities to welcome in the short, dark days of November! We highly recommend you schedule a couple of things from our 8 Great Things list this month.

A drawing of a woman's portrait with a bird in her hair1. See Some Art!

If you haven’t seen the creativity that is happening over at the New Bedford Art Museum, this is your month to visit, with two new exhibitions opening up:

  • Intuitive: A Survey of Visionary Art celebrates the originality of self-taught artists who draw on personal experience, imagination, and an inner drive to create.
  • In Morocco, Seen Closely, photographer Laurie Bullard shares photos from her journey through Morocco, moving from the patterned tilework, pottery, and busy tanneries of its cities to the sweeping dunes of the Sahara. Musicians, grazing goats, and intricate architecture bring moments of life into her study of place.

Both are opening on November 5 for several months. Open Thursday through Sunday from 9 to 5 pm. More here.

2. Learn a New Thing!

We love the premise of the science café…join a bunch of cool nerds getting together to share a beer and a new science topic every night. This month: they explore pending changes to the Endangered Species Act with a focus on right whales, with Dr. Michael Moore from WHOI and Brooke Kushwaha from the New Bedford Light.  Free (beer is extra 😊). November 3 from 6 to 8. More here.

Performers at the Marion Art Center3. Experience an Intimate Concert!

Grammy-nominated Reed Foehl comes to the intimate theater space at the Marion Art Center to perform his songs “from the long way home – weathered, honest and quietly devastating.” He’ll perform with old-time folk, country and blues man Putnam Murdock. You won’t want to miss them together in this unique space! $35. November 7 at 7. More here.

Hanging ornaments by artisans4. Shop the Season’s First Holiday Mart!

November’s Aha! New Bedford night brings more than 40 artisans to the Star Store, including a handful of youth artisans, along with a dessert demonstration and general frivolity, with other free cultural events sprinkled throughout downtown. 5 to 8, November 12. More here.

a bucket of quahogs5. Harvest a Bucket of Clams!

Join the Buzzards Bay Coalition for an intro to shellfishing at North Cove in Fairhaven. Just bring yourself, we’ll take care of everything else (waders, rakes, buckets, etc). Free. November 14 at 2:30. Register here.

6. Celebrate Forests and Farms!

The Mattapoisett Land Trust hosts Forest and Farm Family Day at their Grace Pond Preserve featuring alpacas, goats, and other critters, along with a campfire, s’mores, cider, wool activity and a guided walk with their forester. So fun! Free. 2 to 5:30. More here.

7. Trot like a Turkey!

Join the annual Fairhaven Turkey Trot to benefit Shepherd’s Pantry for a 5K walk or run, your choice! It’s a great way to feel like you can have that second helping and extra slice of pie. Thanksgiving Day. $30 (plus canned goods or non-perishables). November 26 at 8 am. More here.
