September always sneaks up on us and then makes a strong case for best month around here. We have some ideas for you that will make September memorable. Presenting...our 8 Great Things to do this month!
1. Summer Sounds
New Bedford hosts the last of its Summer Sound series with Entrain, the six piece band that can get any room (or city street) going! Bring lawn chairs and park yourself in the middle of lower Union Street, surrounded by lots of good food and drink options. Wear comfortable shoes for dancing on the cobblestones! 2. Boogie on the Bog
This is the fun gala the Marion Institute holds each year to support their wonderful Frogfoot Farm. The actual event date is October 2 but it always sells right out weeks in advance. So we’re putting it on the list this year to mark your calendars to snatch up the tickets right away as soon as they are released on September 8. On that day, pretend it's a Noah Kahan concert and go right to their website(opens in new tab) to reserve your tickets so that on October 2 you’ll be partying in the bogs.
3. In the Field
If you’ve been enjoying our Magnificent Trees feature in the current issue, think about ambling over to Buttonwood Park to join a DATMA tour with arborist Keely Zuber to check out the diverse tree species. You’ll learn more about the historic park that was designed by Charles Eliot during his apprenticeship with Frederic Law Olmsted, as well as about Bug Out, DATMA’s newest public art installation currently on view throughout the park. 4. Ride on!
We’re all over here training for the 20th Watershed Ride in October (still time to sign up for 100, 41 and 20 mile routes(opens in new tab)!) so this month, we’re going to hit one of the Coalition’s Mini-Watershed Rides for a little group training. 5. Rub Elbows with Cute Animals
Twice a year, the magical West Place Animal Sanctuary opens its doors to the public so that they can catch a glimpse of the work they’re doing, rehabilitating personable farm animals in a picturesque setting. Don’t miss this Fall’s opportunity to enjoy a 90 minute guided walking tour (or a special driving tour on their electric club cars). 6. Seafood Soiree
This is one of our favorites! Wander around, enjoying signature small plates featuring local seafood and seasonal produce created by over a dozen of the area’s finest chefs, with cocktails, music, and a live auction, all enjoyed from the scenic waterfront vista at Cisco Brewers New Bedford. $150, September 15 from 5:30 to 8. 7. Harvest Festivals
On either end of the South Coast, you can celebrate with a harvest festival on the last weekend of September. Westport celebrates 3 days of the season with fall garden displays, artsy pumpkin carving, music and live demonstrations at the Westport Fair Grounds. $10 for adults, $5 for kids. September 25 – 27. 8. Drawing Nature
Bring a healthy curiosity, eager to observe the change of the seasons with this workshop presented by the Marion Natural History Museum. Tricia Cassady will focus on graphite and colored pencils, talking about how the various ecosystems at Washburn Park change in the fall (besides the obvious leaves changing color) so that you can document the nature around us and get lost in its beauty -- bring your sketchpads! $20, September 26, 10 to 11:30.
