Explore the art, symbolism, history, and stories hidden in New England cemeteries with the Gravestone Girls as your guides. Hosted by the Dartmouth Cultural Center, you'll begin with an illustrated presentation, enjoy a light lunch, then head to historic South Dartmouth Cemetery for a guided cemetery walk. The Friends of the Miles Standish Park host their annual fishing derby, inviting everyone to come fish at Fearing Pond. They supply the poles, the bait, the expertise and all sorts of prizes. Free, October 3, 10 to 2 (fishing ends at 1, followed by awards). More here.

The Buzzards Bay Watershed is celebrating its 20th Ride on October 4 and they're promising more music, more bananas and more fun to mark the milestone. Registration closes October 1 at midnight, but there's still plenty of people needed for volunteering, or simply joining the epic finish line party in Woods Hole. Come join the fun! Volunteer here. Sweatah weathah is chowdah weatha! Just in time, it's the annual New Bedford Chowder Fest! Sample signature chowders, soups, handheld bites, baked goods, desserts, and more from local food places! $35. October 6 from 4:30 to 8. Rachel's Lakeside, 950 State Road, Dartmouth. More here.

 

5. Magical Fish

Tom Pero joins our walking book tour to dive into the sea-run brook trout that are native to Southeastern Massachusetts, along with efforts to restore them to their habitats with his new book Salter: The improbable return of the magical sea-run brook trout to the little rivers of Cape Cod. At the same time, we'll explore the Agawam River where the salters once flourished and discuss upcoming restoration plans. Free. October 7 from 2 to 4. Register here.

Every year, FABRIC brings together local and visiting artists, communities, and organizations through art, music, food, performance, talks, workshops, and gatherings. We particularly love how it weaves food into performance! Catch at least one of its events this weekend. Various ticket prices. October 8-11. More info here.

The New Bedford Symphony kicks off its new season with conductor Yaniv Dinur presenting the audition piece that got him the job ten years ago – Tchaikovsky’s Symphony Number 4 – plus, Sydney Lee returns to the NBSO to perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, the Mount Everest of the cello repertoire! 7:30 pm at the Zeiterion Theater, New Bedford. Round the Bend Farm hosts its annual Wampanoag Experience Powwow. Native singing, dancing, storytelling, cooking and more on this special day at the farm. $5 in advance. $10 at the gate. October 17 from 10-4. Tickets here.
