Last year, we blogged about a few local polar plunges (see last year’s post here). At the time, it seemed like something to put on the bucket list and we hoped that at least one of our South Coast Almanac team would do it next year. Guess what? It’s next year. We’re all feeling cozy inside right now, with no real urgency to jump in the water. But in the event that you’re feeling inspired tomorrow (or later this month), we’ve updated the list so that you can decide whether you’ll be brave enough to participate.
New Year’s Day
In Fairhaven at 10 am, the annual Polar Plunge will surprise you with its crowd. Brave souls come from all over the state and even outside the state, representing over 40 towns. Proceeds benefit Fairhaven’s Dollars for Scholars Program. (See Fairhaven Polar Plunge) Don’t worry if you decide to sleep in and you miss the Fairhaven festivities. At noon, Mattapoisett’s Freezin’ for A Reason Polar Plunge takes place at the Town Beach. Proceeds benefit families affected by cancer. (See Mattapoisett Polar Plunge)
Between 11 and 2, you can jump from The Back Eddy’s dock as part of its annual Polar Plunge Brunch. We hear that reservations are already filled this year for brunch but there may be room at the bar. The Back Eddy, 1 Bridge Road, Westport. 508-636-6500.
Later This Month
If you’re not quite ready to dive in this weekend, Tabor Academy will be hosting its first annual polar plunge on January 22 to raise money for Special Olympics. Help make Tabor’s first plunge a rousing success. When Tabor is celebrating the 10th, 15th or 25th annual plunge, you can brag about how you were there in the beginning. See Tabor Plunge for more information.
Please let us know if you dive in this month! Send us a picture of your polar plunge or post it on our Facebook wall for a special congratulatory treat from us.
