Each month, we visit a new food spot thanks to the folks at Surprenant, Beneski & Nunes, an estate & elder planning law firm who wanted to shine a spotlight on all of the hardworking folks working in the restaurant world. A family business themselves, they are particularly drawn to other family businesses, like this Tiverton market...
Eat Gnarly Market is small, yes, but it has so much to offer for your culinary needs this week or weekend from local purveyors. Located in a little three-storefront plaza at 2490 Main Road in Tiverton, it is just what the area needs.
Gnarly Vine Farm owners Joel and Ester Bishop started their own food truck during COVID, where their specialties got to be very well-known among Brown University students in Providence. They started doing catered events and parties and in order to do larger events, they needed a commercial kitchen. Although they bought the space to be a commercial kitchen and cook prepared meals to go from the cuts of meat of which they weren’t selling much, Ester Bishop realized that people could have an experience and eat right there.
If you are looking to grill on your own, they have a variety of cuts from locally raised pigs and cows. All the chicken is from their own Gnarly Vines Farm. Buy some handcrafted spice blends, prepared from a unique combination of high-quality, fresh ingredients, jars of which are available there from Pinch of Fancy, located in Fall River. Eat Gnarly also carries We Be Jammin’ jams (Warwick, RI) and Baba Yaga Sauces (Warren, RI) and will be making their own burger buns from scratch soon.
Want some prepared food to go? Try Eat Gnarly’s Feijoada, Brazil's national dish made with woods-raised pork stewed in black beans. The "Bowl" option is served with sautéed collard greens and rice. Pair with cauliflower rice for a lower carb option. There is also a vegetarian option. The Moqueca is a vegan Brazilian stew made with plantains, hearts of palm, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and coconut milk. It is simmered with garlic, lime, and cilantro for a rich, tropical flavor. Like chicken? The unbreaded bone-in chicken coated with garlic and fried in beef tallow is a favorite as well. It is served with rice & beans or French fries.
If you wanna nosh on something while you drive away, try the hot beef or chicken pastel (Brazilian empanada). Need something that will keep? Best to go with the meat or vegetarian pies, or the pork and beef meatballs and freeze ‘em for later.
There is also an assortment of body products, picnic items, and leather bags, all made locally.
Just want to grab some milk or eggs? They have gallons of milk in the fridge provided by Arruda’s and eggs from their own farm.
If you are afraid the food will get cold before you get home or to the nearest beach, eat right there at one of their 10 outdoor tables.
Then grab an ice cream at Helger’s to top off a meal. Or succumb to the allure of the house-made layer cake, the passion fruit mousse, or a stack of Snookey’s Cookies, made out of just four ingredients right in Tiverton.
Can’t get there? They Door Dash.
