Each month, we visit a new food spot thanks to the folks at Surprenant, Beneski & Nunes, an estate & elder planning law firm who wanted to shine a spotlight local gems of the South Coast like Duke's Bakery & Cafe in Fall River!
“No one should have to eat sludge through the holidays!”
Chris and co-founder Dorry had a vision for Duke’s Bakery & Cafe which opened in 2012. They would create an inclusive space that catered to most dietary restrictions. Why should anyone have to miss out when it comes to experiencing a good meal (or treat)?
When Chris and Dorry found out that Dorry's nephew was put on a gluten-free diet, they couldn’t bear to see him settling for subpar treats. Not being gluten-free herself, Chris remembers creating iteration after iteration until she landed on what she calls a gluten-free recipe that “tastes just like it’s supposed to!” This was the catalyst for Duke's.
After ten years in business, Dorry passed away. Chris was devastated and felt like giving it up. Instead of closing shop, she decided to continue in her honor.
“I want to celebrate life and make people feel joy when they come here.”
When you come to Duke’s, you can feel it. From vibrant seasonal decorations and tabletop games to fun mystery treats, you can’t help but feel happy!

First, we tried the coffee cake muffin. Because, who says you can’t start with something sweet? With coffee cake being one of my favorite treats, I was eager to see what it was all about. I was very pleasantly surprised. I even dare say this was the best coffee cake dessert I’ve had (and it just happens to be gluten-free!)

Next, we decided to try the most popular item on the menu – the chicken and waffles of course. Not only did they hit the spot, but truthfully, they did taste like they’re supposed to!
Duke’s chicken and waffles are so beloved that they now operate a chicken and waffle food truck. It doesn’t stop there. Chris’s son, Dennis, who helps run the bakery today, started up a chicken & waffle challenge called the “gauntlet.” The challenge, which has yet to be conquered: an individual eating 4 full chicken and waffle dishes, 1 pound of tater tots & fries, and 1/4 pound of meat, all topped by your sauce of choice. Gluten-free influencer, @feedmefay, even tried it out but was unable to finish.
You don’t actually need to be gluten-free (or willing to try the gauntlet) to enjoy Duke’s Bakery & Cafe. Come for the vibes and stay for the deliciousness!
