Good Laughs & Seriously Good Food at Bun Buds

Since 2020, Surprenant, Beneski & Nunes, P.C. has been happily supporting local food spots by spotlighting a new one each month. A local business, specializing in estate planning and elder law, they're sending us out to fun local gems like Bun Buds in Fall River!

Classic Hot Dog - Bun Buds

What does not belong with hot dogs? We asked Jacob, the owner of Bun Buds restaurant and food truck. "Salad!” he says “Sorry, Chicago!” (Yes, Chicago dog salads are a thing... We googled it.)

It was a Friday afternoon, and we decided to stop by the Bun Buds brick and mortar location—a bright and playful space located in Fall River, decorated with whimsical objects like their hot dog Lego figures and a personified dumpling that greets you as you walk in. Then, Jacob greets you vivaciously.

Jacob is in his twenties and has a very personal connection to food. With early memories of watching Ratatouille on repeat and vacations with family centering around special meals, he knew pretty quickly he wanted to pursue a career in culinary arts.

Now, a graduate of Johnston and Whales, he reflects on his path to opening Bun Buds -- from working in fine dining to running a hot dog stand. But what started with a hot dog stand, turned into a DIY food truck which offered more than just hot dogs. Foot long hot dogs, dumplings, and now today the latest menu addition, bao buns.

While there is a level of silliness to the brand and social media content (follow their social for some giggles!), there is also a deep respect and thought put into the curation of flavors. Jacob explains it’s important to him to be exploratory but also stay true to elements of the culinary roots of the food he offers.

We tried dumplings, bao buns, and a classic foot long hot dog. Fireworks! The flavors remind us of the scene in Ratatouille where Remy the rat experiences new flavors for the first time  and we’ve come to the conclusion that although Bun Buds might not take themselves too seriously, they make some seriously good food.
