8 Great Things logoThe sneaky great news is that it’s September and you know what that means? Beautiful weather and less crowds. Could it be the most perfect month on the South Coast?! We’re not going to take a definitive stand on that but we are suggesting it. Here are 8 Great Things to make this September your best month yet!

1. Party Like It’s 1999!

Aha! New Bedford is throwing a giant outdoor birthday bash for itself to celebrate its 25th birthday! Join them for jamming music sessions, circus arts, 90s fashions, art & community murals and – of course – birthday cake!! Free. Downtown New Bedford around Front, Centre, Water Streets and Union Streets. Schedule of events is evolving but you can see some of it here.

2. Seafood Soiree

The Fishing Heritage Center is bringing 17 phenomenal chefs together to create signature seafood dishes. We heard from people who went last year that it’s pretty spectacular! And it all benefits the Fishing Heritage Center. $150. 5:30 to 7:30 on September 17, Cisco Brewery, 1482 East Rodney French Blvd, New Bedford. More here.

3. Pedal for the Path

Jump on your bike and ride the 35 mile loop of the Dartmouth Heritage Trail, hosted by the South Coast Bikeway Alliance. The event is free (donations are welcome) and…ba-dum-dum….ice cream! We can’t imagine anything better on a Saturday in September. September 8. More here.

4. Speaking of Bikes

The Coalition’s signature Watershed Ride of the season is next month. They’re hosting mini-rides all this month to help people get ready for it…you don’t have to commit to the Watershed Ride to enjoy the mini rides this month! Free at various times and places. September 7 from Coastal Roasters at 7:30; September 14 from Buzzards Bay Brewing at 3:00; September 21 on the Phoenix Bike Trail at 1:30 pm. More information and registration here.

5. Forest Bathing!

The DNRT introduces us to the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing). What does that mean? A trained guide will lead us on a slow paced wander in the woods, including some periods for sitting and reflection. Scientifcally proven to increase well-being, calm and restoration --and who doesn’t need that? Free. Wednesdays in September from 5:30 to 7..Paskamansett Woods, 19 Chase Road, Dartmouth. 6. Foodie Alert!

New Bedford Food Tours now has three great tours, exploring both New Bedford and Fall River. We went on their North End tour earlier this summer and were blown away by the new restaurants and flavors we enjoyed. Do yourself a favor and walk around our two great cities and enjoy it from the food perspective. $80 (includes tour guide, all food at multiple stops and tip). Thursday through Saturday afternoons in September. See here for more information.

7. A Musical Collage

Great Saturday night date nights are back with the New Bedford Symphony! Season opener features several additions to the usual world class musicians of the NBSO. Throughout the auditorium there will be different musical elements, including Cape Verdean and jazz, which will provide a musical collage before ending with a Brahm’s Symphony! As always, we’ll be sitting in the back row. Come join us! Tickets start at $20. September 28 at 7:30 pm. More information here.

8. Tailgate Party for Birders

Mattapoisett is hosting a “big sit” where birders (beginners are welcome) bring their portable chairs and gather together to see how many species they can see from within a small circle. It’s birding with friends, old and new! It's led by Justin Barrett and Mike LaBossiere from Nasketucket Bird Club and all are welcome. Free. 8:00-10:00 am on September 29 at the Grace Meadow preserve ( located at the end of Bowman Road, just off of Aucoot Road). Please RSVP here so they know how many to expect.
