8 Great Things: October on the South Coast

8 Great Things logoOctober is filled with things to do on the South Coast, from powwows to chowder festivals. We’ve rounded up 8 great events to help you make the most of this month!

   1. A Powwow! 

We don’t know if we’re more excited to catch the native food demonstrations or the Wampanoag dancers. Round the Bend’s Wampanoag Powwow is a fun and educational event for all ages!  General admission is $5, and kids under 10 get in free. 10 to 5 on October 5, 92 Allens Neck Road, Dartmouth. Walking Book Tour - John Bullard2. Walk with Us!

Didn’t read the book yet? Yes, you can still come! Join us on October 5 as we stroll through the Acushnet Avenue North End district of New Bedford, accompanied by former Mayor John Bullard with his memoir, Hometown, while enjoying the public art and international flavors of the North End. Free. 2 to 4 pm on October 5. North End, New Bedford. Details and registration here.

 

3. Arts Festival

Fall is craft season. And festival season. Tell us otherwise. Spend the day exploring unique crafts, vibing to live music, and eating delicious food. Oh, and there’s fun activities for the kids too! Free. 10 to 4 on October 5.  At the intersections of Rtes 18 & 105 and Precinct Street in Lakeville. Learn more.

A trail of the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust4. Walk Back in Time!

We’re getting our Indiana Jones hats ready! Holly Herbster, Senior Archaeologist at the Public Archaeology Laboratory, will guide us through Destruction Brook Woods, sharing the rich Native American history of the area and exploring old cellar holes and foundations. Free and fun for all! 10 to 11:30 on October 12. Check it out.

 

5. Chowdah!

Who’s ready for some chowdah?! You don’t have to ask us twice to come sample the best chowders and soups New Bedford has to offer. Cast your vote for your favorite while enjoying live music from Be Kind Rewind. Free shuttle rides are available from the Whale’s Tooth Parking Lot. VIP tickets offer early access and special tastings! 11 to 3  on October 12. Tickets for adults start at $15. New Bedford State Pier. Tickets are available here.

 

6. Fabric Arts!

We were still so busy thinking about the incredible displays and performances we saw last year that we couldn’t believe it’s that time of the year again. Visual arts, music, dinners, and conversations with artists from diverse backgrounds…sign us up! Various events, many free. From October 10-13 in Fall River & Providence. Learn more here.

 

7. Little Shop of Horrors!

Boo! Are you brave enough to catch the delightful musical Little Shop of Horrors at the Little Theatre? Follow the story of Seymour and his carnivorous plant, Audrey II, in this entertaining show, with great music. $30 (for adults, $10 for kids). October 17-27th. 340 Prospect Street, Fall River. 8. Dance Party in an Unexpected Setting!

We’re ready to…. dance the night away (in our seats)! Feel the rhythm of dance-inspired classical music at this New Bedford Symphony concert. With pieces like Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, we’re ready to be transported. Newport Contemporary Ballet will join for the finale, bringing Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé to life on stage. October 26 at 7:30 pm.Tickets start at $20. More info and tickets here.
