8 Great Things: March on the South Coast

With that crazy winter storm in the rear view mirror, it’s time to MARCH forth into Spring!  Make the most of this month by picking one or two of our top picks for the month on our 8 Great Things list.

1. Embracing Awkwardness

March is kind of an awkward month. We've got dirty snow piled around us while the promise of spring is just poking around the corner. Author Maggie Jackson joins the NB Science Café to discuss “Cringeworthy: Discovering the Overlooked Promise of Awkwardness.” Maggie led us on an entertaining hunt for uncertainty on one of our favorite walking book tours (see photo above) so we’d show up for anything she decides to talk about! Free (beer is extra!). March 3 from 6 to 8 pm. Last Round Bar & Grille, 908 Purchase Street, New Bedford. More here.

2. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

The Seaglass Theater Company packs a whole heap of talent. This month, they celebrate Ireland’s musical legacy with a concert spanning traditional folk, classical masterpieces, Broadway favorites, and modern pop hits. Join them in downtown Fairhaven. $33.85. Sunday, March 15 at 3 pm. More here.

chili3. Just Chili’n

Warm up with some spicy chili and friendly folks at Onset Bay Association's Mostly Annual Chili Cookoff. Think no one can beat your chili? Sign up to enter and put yourself in the running for the $250 cash prize. Or just show up to judge them for yourself (everyone gets to vote!).  $25 each. 5:30 to 8:30 pm. March 21. Stone Path Malt, 11 Kendrick Road, Wareham.More here.

4. Find Your Family

It's a great month to bury yourself in some fun research. Many libraries have tools to help you do genealogical research. This month, the New Bedford Public Library is hosting a class on how to utilize them. Free. Visit their downtown branch, March 14 at 10:30 am.

5. Spring Awakening

Get outside and officially welcome Spring with a 1.5 mile vernal equinox walk with the Westport Land Conservation Trust. Free. Friday, March 20 at noon. More here.

Rotch-Jones-Duff Home6. Bring Your Own Book!

Imagine a book club where you’re in total control of the book choice! BYOBook Club NB, a pop up reading community where people come together to share space, stories and conversation, is handing us that control. Bring your current favorite material to their March meeting at the Rotch-Jones-Duff House. For the first hour, everyone reads side by side. For the second hour, people chat about their readings, with a guest author joining near the end! Free but registration is required. Tuesday, March 24, 6:30 to 8:30 pm. More here.

7. A Little Social Stargazing

They say winter is the best time for stargazing! Join the Buzzards Bay Coalition and other starry-eyed locals at the Sawmill for a free astronomer-led stargazing event. Wednesday, March 25, 6 to 8 pm. More here.

2 girls ice skating at the rink 8. Nice Skating

Inspired by the Olympics? You can embrace these last days of winter by getting out on the ice! There's public skating nearly every day of the week in both New Bedford and Fall River.
