8 Great Things: March on the South Coast

It’s that lovely month of springtime hopefulness. Sure, there may be some cold windy days, but who cares? We’ve got spring in our sights. And everything this month feels like a celebration.

Sometime along the way, we started hearing terms like metrological spring (March 1) which is different than astronomical spring (March 20ish). There is a third option. We officially tie spring to the opening of the first seasonal ice cream shop opening. Good news, people! Dairy Maid opens this weekend in New Bedford. A maple sugar tap2. Tap Into Some Great Energy

Wander over to Bristol, RI to experience the tradition of tapping the trees at Coggeshall Farm. Guests will see the process of extracting sap from the tree, all the way to sugaring down, which is removing the water from the sap, only leaving sugar behind. Interpreters will be available to explain the history related to environmental impacts, land usage, trade, and early abolitionist movements. March 1 and 2.  $10 for adults/ $5 for children. 1 Colt Drive, Bristol. It’s chowder season and Fishing For The Mission, a non-profit for veterans in crisis, is hosting a great fundraiser at Stone Path Malt in Wareham. With over a dozen participating restaurants, you can get your fill of chowder while enjoying Stone Path Malt’s brews. The evening tasting is sold out but there are still a few afternoon spots available. $20. March 8, noon to 3 pm. More here.

The New Bedford Art Museum hosts film screenings of great movies you should see again! This month: Blade Runner where Harrison Ford hunts down fugitive replicants in a futuristic LA.  More than a movie night, enjoy a pre and post film discussion with New Bedford’s favorite film professor, Dr. Mocha J. Herrup. Free. March 9 at 5 pm. More here.

You may know that Yaniv Dinur loves conducting and telling jokes.  Did you know he’s also got amazing piano skills? Come enjoy an evening of Dinur on the piano in the beautiful Fireman Center for Performing Arts at Tabor Academy.  Friday March 14 and 15. 7:30 pm. Tickets here.

Join the Tri-County Symphonic as they focus on the history of jazz this month. Jazz Through the Decades will highlight important composers guiding the audience through the various styles of jazz over the years. It’s a history lesson with rhythm! $15 in advance (children under 12 are free), March 16 at 3:00. More here.

7. Celebrate Spring (again!)

You’ve celebrated metrological spring. Now celebrate the astronomical beginning of spring with the Westport Land Trust. A brief overview of the Equinox from scientific and cultural perspectives will be followed by a sensory walk, where participants take time to fully experience this pause between the seasons, Free. March 20 from 4:30 to 6. Westport Woods Conservation Park. More here.

Join the Onset Bay Center for Beach Madness where you can build a sculpture with sand or snow, depending on what mother nature decides (it’s March! You gotta be flexible!) Spectators vote for their favorites, enjoy warm drinks and prizes are awarded at the end. Free. 11 to 1:30. March 30, 186 Onset Avenue. RSVP here.
