Rowers on the Westport River

8 Great Things: June on the South Coast

June! Perched on the edge of summer, it's our favorite month (until next month!) Here are our 8 top picks of things to welcome summer to the South Coast.

Two classic rowboats on the Westport River1. Pull! Pull! Pull!

It's too late to register to row, but it's not too late to make a reservation at Westport Sea Farms or the Back Eddy to watch classic rowing boats navigate a 4 mile race course on the Westport River during the Westport River Invitational Regatta. The viewing is free at multiple locations that can be found on their map (see here); any food and drink you enjoy along the way are, of course, extra! Race starts at 11 am. June 7.

Inside the Yellow House in Tiverton2. Embracing Uncertainty

Some of our favorite things: independent bookstores and our walking book tour authors. This month, we can celebrate both with a visit to the Yellow House in Tiverton where author Maggie Jackson uses her book Uncertain: the Wisdom and Wonder of Being Unsure (named a Top 25 Nonfiction Book of 2024 by the Next Big Idea Club led by Malcolm Gladwell and others) to help us appreciate and lean into the uncertainty that surrounds us (such a timely topic!). Maggie led one of our 2023 walking book tours, so we can tell you firsthand that this will be a great discussion! Free, June 8 from 4 to 5 pm. Tiverton Four Corners. Space is limited so reserve your space! More here.

Roses in bloom in the garden at the RJD House3. Rubies & Roses

The Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Gardens is a special jewel on the South Coast and we're happy to celebrate their 40th (Ruby!) anniversary this year, just at that time of the year when the roses are spectacularly blooming. Accessorize your cocktail attire with rubies or something ruby-colored. Your ticket includes a donation to the Museum, food, and open bar and supports the Museum’s educational, community outreach and preservation efforts. $150. June 12 from 6 to 9 pm. 396 County Street, New Bedford. More here.

a cicada4. A Bug's Life

This spring, we'll have a front-row seat to a rare natural event—the return of cicada brood XIV, emerging for the first time since 2008! The Wareham Land Trust is hosting a guided walk and talk at the Red Brook Trail Network as we explore the fascinating world of cicadas and learn more about this buzzing spectacle. Free but registration is required. June 14 from 9 to 11. Lyman Reserve. More info and reservation info here.

an old fashioned postcard picture of people enjoying music on the Onset Bluffs5.  Summer of Love

Set your weekly calendar! Each Wednesday night from the end of June through August, Onset hosts fabulous music at its historic bandshell for their Summer of Love music series. Hundreds of people come each week to enjoy the music and the views of Onset Bay. Free, every Wednesday starting June 25. 6:30 to 9 pm. 1 Union Ave, Onset. More here.

An eagle soaring against a blue sky6. Look to the Sky

There's a great speaker series at Allen's Pond Stone Barn this summer. This month, hear from Tina Morris who will share her remarkable journey as a young graduate student tasked with reintroducing bald eagles to New York State in 1976, including the challenges she faced as a female pioneer in raptor biology, her experiences "mothering" seven eaglets, and how this pivotal project not only helped save an iconic species from extinction but also shaped her own personal growth and career. Free but registration is required. June 26 from 7 to 8 pm. More here.

Buzzards Bay Swimmers celebrating after their Swim7. Swim! Kayak! Volunteer!

The Buzzards Bay Coalition kicks off summer in the most fun and spirited way possible. Hundreds jump into the New Bedford Harbor to raise money and awareness for clean water. They are greeted on the other side at Fort Phoenix with a steel drum band, a pancake and beer breakfast and a cheering crowd. There's room for more swimmers, kayakers and volunteers so come join the fun! 7 to 10 am, June 28. Starting at Cisco Beach. Find out more here.

Actors rehearsing for The Glass Menagerie8. The Glass Menagerie

We love seeing anything in the charming little theater at the Marion Art Center. This month, enjoy a little Tennessee Williams on multiple weekends in June. $20 members/$23 non-members. June 13-29, various times. More here.
