January was a rough one! But we're turning the page on to February, that short quick month that sometimes surprises us with balmy spring-like days. Still, we've included more indoor activities than usual on our 8 Great Things list. Settle in and get cozy with February!
1. Adrift!
Maybe you read the book. Maybe you listened to the podcast. 76 Days Adrift is the gripping tale of a man whose boat was rammed by a whale and who then spent 76 days alone on the ocean before being rescued. Now’s your chance to see the movie at the Whaling Museum, followed by a Q&A with the executive producer. $12.50 for members/$25 for non-members. February 4 at 6. More here.
2. Valentine's Farmers Market
For the past 5 years, Tiverton has held an annual farmers market to celebrate Valentine's Day and this year it also coincides with Super Bowl Sunday. So go check out the local vendors for great food, drink and artisan wares to celebrate both events. You'll be home well before kickoff. Free. February 8 from 10 to 2 pm. More here.
3. Back Where They Belong
The New Bedford Symphony is back settling into the Zeiterion this month. And perfectly scheduled for Valentine's Day! We can’t wait to get into those seats to listen to dozens of remarkable musicians who are capable of transporting us to a special evening of zen. But, wait, that's not all! The Symphony is offering a delightful series of pre-concert events in all the nooks and crannies of The Z: think bourbon tasting in the speakeasy, gentle breathing reset session in the movement studio. Tickets start at $36 and activities begin at 6:30, with the concert starting at 7:30. February 14. More here.
4. In Search of Love Birds
Think outside the chocolates and flowers box and take your valentine on a "Love Birds" walk with the Sippican Lands Trust and the Nasketucket Bird Club. Starting at Silvershell Beach, the group will look out for water birds before they make their way north. Free but donations are welcome. Please register here. February 14 at 1:00.
5. Dance Amidst the Art
The New Bedford Art Museum is doing a lot of interdisciplinary art work. And we are here for it! This month, catch professional dancer Steven Vaughn with a new solo performance that responds to the Museum’s current display, Artistic Luminaries: Three Local Icons, in a performance entitled "In a Landscape". Free, February 10 at 6 pm. More here.
6. Seals!! They're back!
Some people call it spring when they spot the first Robin. We think spring arrives with the first seal. Good news for us! The Buzzards Bay Coalition’s Seal and Seabird cruises start up this month and that means...spring! Everyone raves about these trips which also include a guided walk on Cuttyhunk Island. We highly recommend bundling up and get out there to witness the magic. $53 for adults/$37 for children.February 28, March 14, April 11 and 25, May 9 and 16. More here.
7. Billiards!
Feel like some indoor fun and games? Check out the new Cape Cod Billiards Academy in downtown Buzzards Bay. Normally, a club reserved for members, they’re inviting teams in to play 8 ball or 9 ball on Wednesday evenings. Most of the entry fee goes into the prize pool. $20. Wednesdays at 6. 111 Main Street, Buzzards Bay. More here.
8. The Hills Are Alive!
It may be not be cool to admit this, but we love The Sound of Music. This month, we can amble over to the Z to watch it on the big screen which is where it belongs. It's all part of the return of their Movie Monday series. Sigh. We're so glad the Z is back! $12, February 23 at 2 pm. More here.
There you have it! 8 great ways to while away the month, as we wait for winter to recede!
