Pour Farm Tavern Opens in Wareham

Each month, we visit a new food spot thanks to the folks at Surprenant, Beneski & Nunes, an estate & elder planning law firm, which likes to shine a spotlight on cool local food spots, like the Pour Farm Tavern, which recently opened a new location in Wareham.

Beer aficionados, unite! Wareham is a great destination for tasting craft brews now thanks to two serious establishments that keep on top of trending brews for discerning patrons to enjoy.

Some may have been dismayed when Lucky Goat Brewing’s tap room in Wareham closed at the end of last year. But while owner and local resident Kendall Peabody was contemplating this major life decision, the launch of a second location of New Bedford’s popular Pour Farm Tavern was in the works. It joins Stone Path Malt as another destination for beer, pub food, and good times with friends.

Brad and Jen Cardoza opened their new establishment earlier this year in the space on Main Street formerly occupied by Scarlet Rose Bistro. Months of renovations resulted in an expanded kitchen (Scarlet Rose had leased a kitchen in an entirely separate building) and some different décor.

There is good food to be enjoyed in this intimate space, and it can get busy real fast during the lunchtime rush. Jen says they take pride in the consistency of their bar pizza’s nearly burnt edges. They come in one size (10 inches), but numerous flavor combos, such as classic cheese, BBQ pulled pork, and a brisket cheese steak. The menu includes a number of pub-style sandwiches, from the popular Cubano to a honey fried chicken sandwich.

One of the most exciting things Brad and Jen are bringing to the new space are brewery “takeovers.” This is when breweries do special tastings at an establishment, “taking over” the bars’ draughts.

Brad has long been interested in beer. In fact, he came to own the New Bedford Pour Farm Tavern because he made friends with the previous owner and for years accompanied him on many trips to experience breweries in the US and beyond. He values the many relationships he’s made with brewers far and wide over the years.

A takeover this Saturday at noon features two of his favorite New England breweries: Schilling Beer Co. in Littleton, New Hampshire and Foam Brewers in Burlington, Vermont. “Dan O’Hara from Foam and Robert Blake from Schilling will be hanging out, talking beer, and bringing some great swag,” says Brad.

Schilling Beer Co. will be pouring a Czech Pilsner from Pour Farm’s Lukr tap (a special tap that allows the bartender to create dense, creamy foam via an internal micro-screen), a German Pils, a Vienna Lager, a Dunkel, and a Czech Dark. Foam Brewers will be pouring a variety of hazy pale ales and IPAs.

Brad is also a big fan of Long Live Beer Works out of Providence, Hill Farmstead from Vermont, and Canton’s Trillium. He is always looking forward to bringing beers from these breweries to the tavern, and hopes to soon incorporate some of Maryland’s RaR Brewing’s selections to Wareham.

Brad has long worked in the fitness business and owned a gym at the Kilburn Mill. But with the two restaurants, he thought it best to sell the gym and focus on the selection of beer at the two taverns. “It’s a beer geek’s dream job,” he says.
