Walking Book Tours on the South Coast

We’re bringing walking book tours to the South Coast where we use books as an excuse to take afternoon walks! We stole this idea from the Brits (see here) but are putting a decidedly South Coast spin on it by choosing books and/or authors with a connection to our region.

Here are some upcoming rambles:

  • in Onset Village retracing the double-crossing characters of Dwyer Murphy's engaging heist novel, The Stolen Coast, on May 11;
  • in summer, we'll walk around downtown New Bedford, following Ralph Waldo Emerson's footsteps and his New Bedford sources of inspiration;
  • later in the year, we'll explore the vibrant Acushnet Avenue district of New Bedford with former Mayor John Bullard's autobiography, Hometown.

Walking Book Tour participants on the beach at West Island, FairhavenWhat’s a walking book tour, anyway? It’s the opportunity to get outside with fellow book lovers and explore a new corner of the South Coast and wonderful books with some connection to the South Coast.

When and where is the next walking book tour?

On May 11, we'll gather in Onset Village to explore Dwyer Murphy's inspiration for The Stolen Coast. Last summer, all our neighbors were sitting at the beach tearing through it. It's a fun and fast read. And Dwyer Murphy's edgy love for the area shines through as he creates a world of shifty and engaging characters.

Join us as we explore his book and the inspiration for its locale, as much a character as any of the people in the book.

The May 11 event is FREE but pre-registration is required here.

Sponsored by the Wareham Cultural Council, Mass Cultural Council and the Wareham Free Library.
